TU Osher News & Notes

Stop Making Cents

A nickel for your thoughts—or whatever the going rate is—provided you don’t need odd amounts of change. Last month, the U.S. Mint stopped producing pennies. Just days later, I was behind someone in line at the store when the cashier handed them change and stated, “we don’t have any more pennies.” Out of pennies already? I had a twinge of guilt, thinking they all ended up in my sofa or in my ceramic jug that is comically labeled “retirement fund”. Pennies cost more to make than they are worth, so it makes sense that they aren’t manufactured any more, but I’m going to miss those little guys. I grew up in fear that I would one day drop a penny from the top floor of a skyscraper and kill some poor person just minding their own beeswax on the sidewalk below. (I imagined that the term “penny pincher” was created to describe people who held onto their coins for dear life, lest they drop one and split open the head of some poor passerby.) I have fond memories of walking along the train tracks with my friends, putting pennies on the rails and then retrieving the smooth, flattened coins after the coast was clear. The dangers weren’t lost on us youngsters, making the shiny artifacts even more spectacular. Such cheap thrills are now relics of the past. Nowadays, it’ll cost you.

Stay safe and healthy,
