TU Osher News & Notes

My hero

Normally, I wear contact lenses, but I’ve been wearing my glasses a lot lately. Whenever I do, I'm somewhat surprised that people recognize me. I sometimes catch myself saying, “it’s me, Tracy” as if I’ve donned a very convincing disguise. But my glasses aren’t fooling anyone. It does seem silly that a pair of glasses would throw people off that much. As a child, I wondered how Clark Kent could go unrecognized as Superman and how nobody could tell that Diana Prince was Wonder Woman. It was the glasses! Of course, superhero tales require us to suspend disbelief and accept that just because Peter Parker and Spiderman are never in the same place at the same time, it isn't obvious to everyone that they are one and the same. Think of all the outfits that Bruce Banner goes through when his rage transforms him into an unjolly green giant with bulging muscles that shred his button-down shirts and khakis—and still, nobody notices the connection. I’m no superhero but I have given plenty of thought to what I’d want my superpower to be, and I bet you have too. Would you want to be able to fly anywhere in an invisible helicopter? Leap tall buildings in a single bound? Scale the side of a skyscraper with your own boy wonder in tow? I’m not fancy, so I’ll just settle for the power of persuasion and 20/20 vision.

Stay safe and healthy,

For a Jewish Jazz great, a 100th birthday is a time for a celebration and a new album

Making it to your 100th birthday would be an impressive enough accomplishment for any musician, but for legendary vibraphonist and bebop pioneer Terry Gibbs, who was born in Brooklyn in 1924 as Julius Herbert Gubenko, it’s also an opportunity to promote a new release from his archives. Seth Keibel, who teaches Osher courses on music, writes that Gibbs actually retired from performing at 92. But he’s still actively promoting his career and hasn't lost his razor-sharp wit.
