TU Osher News & Notes

Personal best

I’ve never run a marathon. I've never wanted to run a marathon. In fact, I get a stitch in my side just thinking about it. I do, however, admire people who have the wherewithal to put one foot in front of the other for 26.2 miles. Of course, it takes endurance, but it also requires a certain mentality whether we run long distances or not. It’s the same thinking that professional baseball players must have as they begin the season. If they lose that first game, they can't throw in the towel. There are still 161 more to go. We learn from our losses and keep moving forward. We all experience periods when nothing seems to be going right, when the universe appears to be conspiring against us, when we simply can’t catch a break. The metaphorical shoes are dropping left and right, but we keep going, maybe not because we want to so much as because we have to. Call it being resilient. Call it overcoming adversity. Call it whatever you’d like, but don’t forget that to get where you are now, you’ve persevered through challenges that have made you stronger and wiser. Despite the blisters, the sore knees, the chafing—real or figurative—you know that euphoric high that comes with going the distance.

Stay safe and healthy,

Human Library 2024

Cook Library and the Center for Student Diversity invite you to participate in our Human Library Event on Wednesday, October 9, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. in Ballroom A on the 3rd floor of Towson’s University Union.

What is the Human Library? The Human Library is a conversation event, where people act as books with titles like: Muslim, Gay, Republican, Alcoholic, Lesbian, ADHD, Lower income, Transgender, etc. Essentially, people become a library of human beings! Books are checked out by readers for about 30 minutes so they can learn from one another. Ultimately, the event hopes to challenge societal prejudices and to bring a better understanding of community to everyone involved. We want to show the world, “don’t judge a book by its cover!"

Ready to participate in this year's Human Library? Volunteer to be a book or Register to be a reader.

We want to hear from you!

A new school year doesn’t just mean hitting the books. It’s also time to enjoy extracurricular activities. Osher volunteers lead book clubs and writing groups that meet outside of classes. They are a great way to meet other Osher members and explore your interests. We want to hear what types of special interest groups you’d like to see at Osher.
