TU Osher News & Notes

Red light, green light

It never fails — when I’m running late, every traffic light in my path will turn a blaring red as soon as I come near. It’s like they are mocking me for taking a few extra minutes to get out the door. It’s not just red lights, though. If I need to be somewhere in a hurry, I will undoubtedly find myself behind any combination of garbage trucks, school buses, bicycles or out-of-towners who don’t know where the heck they’re going. I try to be patient as I wait at the light behind another driver. I hate to use the dreaded horn, but I’m sorry, if the light turns green and the car ahead of me stays still for too long, I must honk. Come on people, we have places to be, things to do. Don’t just sit there when the light turns green! A couple of weeks ago, The Baltimore Banner reported that in February, Baltimore will be finished with a three-year project to retime the traffic lights in the city. Hallelujah! Apparently, they had a less than successful try at retiming the signals about seven years ago. This time, I hope they get it right. The project is underway, and some areas have already been completed. Will over 1,100 newly timed traffic lights help get me places on time? We’ll find out. If my father was alive, he would tell me to plan better and leave earlier. If my mother was alive, she would shrug and say, “You’ll get there when you get there.” I hope that you don’t face this same type of traffic-related Murphy’s Law when you are trying to get somewhere on time. While I will inevitably get stuck at a red light, I wish you green lights all the way to your destination.

Stay safe and healthy,

Blockbuster Adventures: The Movies that Made Our Summers

Thursday, August 14, 12–1 p.m., Zoom

Although Jaws fully established the concept, the origin of the summer blockbuster is a bit more complicated. What did the Planet of the Apes series and The Godfather have to do with it? How did a movie marketing strategy become a lasting cultural phenomenon, and are the days of the blockbuster numbered? With a look at big-budget spectacles from the 1970s to the present, Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg tells the story of the films that packed theaters every summer, capturing the public consciousness in a way no movie is ever likely to do again.
