TU Osher News & Notes

Simply the Best

Following the death of music legend, Tina Turner, I did a simple Google search entering in the star’s name into the search field. At the top of the search results was the question “Did you mean simply the best?” Why, yes, I guess that is what I meant. I know that Tina Turner had a hit song titled “The Best” and a greatest hits compilation called “Simply the Best”, but nonetheless I think it’s exceptionally cool to have one's name and career associated with such a superlative. That is high praise and there probably aren’t a lot of people who don’t think it is well-deserved. I remember my mother belting out Tina Turner songs along with the radio when I was a little girl. Together we saw “What’s Love Got to Do with It” starring Angela Bassett in the movie theater when it came out years later. Just a few years ago, in Zumba class, I felt like I was Tina Turner as I danced along to “Proud Mary” and I’m sure that each of my Zumba-mates felt like they, too, embodied Tina. The songs. Those legs. That life story. From the early 60s until her last performance in 2009, she lit up the stage entertaining multiple generations. “Simply the best” seems to be an apt summary of her legacy. Not too bad for a girl from Nutbush, Tennessee!

Stay safe and healthy,
