A natural evolution.
From our founding as a teacher preparation school, to our place as workforce leaders in healthcare, STEM and computer science – Towson University has always adapted to meet the contemporary needs of our state and region.
TU's commitment to achieve R2 Doctoral Carnegie Classification for high research activity is the latest example of our institution’s natural evolution.
Advancing our research activity not only expands and strengthens experiential learning opportunities for our students, it also supports faculty scholarship and research aimed at addressing the great challenges facing our nation and globe today.
That's not all. Expanding research opportunities is also a major effort in strengthening TU's inclusive excellence. Towson University is home to one of the most diverse student populations in the University System of Maryland and is one of a handful of universities in the nation where there is no completion gap. All students – inclusive of all demographics – graduate at the same rate, the second-highest rate in the USM. We owe it to TU's students to make research opportunities with outstanding faculty accessible right here on campus.
To reach this goal, TU has committed to invest $14.5 million from 2021-2026 in our staffing, resources and research assistantships. And with the support of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, we recently expanded our mission toward a more extensive research and graduate program agenda – so TU continues to be a contemporary leader in higher education for Maryland and our region.
The future of Towson University is truly brighter than ever. Today and every day, it is a great time to be a Towson Tiger.
Sincerely,
Kim Schatzel, Ph.D.
