On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its preliminary employment estimates for Maryland in September 2017. For the fifth straight month, Maryland’s unemployment rate dropped to a new low, where it now sits at 3.8 percent. The unemployment rate for other states in the Mid-Atlantic Region stayed constant at 4.5 percent. The underlying numbers suggest Maryland’s economy is doing better than its neighbors. How much so?

The children's retail giant has sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure $5 billion in debt, but is aiming to keep its Toys ‘R’ Us and Babies ‘R’ Us stores open. Daraius Irani, PhD, stated that the stores would not be expected to completely disappear due to the increase in online shopping, he noted, “they just need to figure out where their niche is and really establish a local identity so people say, 'Yeah, I could get it from Amazon, but this offers more unique experience in terms of product selection.’”

Prince George's Joins Baltimore in Competing for Amazon Headquarters

Amazon set off a national when it invited metro areas to apply to be the company’s second home. Both Prince George's County and Baltimore City submitted proposals. According to Daraius Irani, PhD, A headquarters in Prince George’s County would benefit from a broader potential workforce, drawing employees from Washington, D.C., and Virginia, whereas a Virginia-to-Baltimore commute may be a hard sell.
