An Interactive Look at Maryland and the Regional Economy in October 2018

• The most recent jobs report showed that between September and October, Maryland added a substantial increase of 10,700 Total Nonfarm positions, including 9,000 Total Private jobs and 1,700 Government jobs.

• Maryland’s largest employment gains were made in the Other Services supersector which rose by 2,600 positions, followed by a gain of 2,300 positions in the Professional and Business Services supersector.

• The unemployment rate for Maryland was 4.1 percent in October, down slightly from 4.2 percent in September.

Howard Touts Regional Strengths as Three Tech Firms Say They're Leaving for Baltimore's Port Covington

The Howard County Economic Development Authority is seeking to attract companies to the suburban area that value the highly-educated workforce, low crime levels, and high-quality public schools in the county. According to RESI Chief Economist Dr. Daraius Irani, focusing on the strengths and assets of the region by the HCEDA “is probably the most efficient approach to economic development.” Dr. Irani also noted, “[They] are leveraging [their] existing growth companies to attract companies in these areas to locate into your county. It is a long-term strategy and requires discipline and focus.”
