For years, the Regional Economic Studies Institute (RESI) at Towson University has provided monthly updates on Maryland’s economy. Last month, RESI’s Chief Economist, Dr. Daraius Irani, unveiled the newest tool to allow you to understand the economy of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Region: The Mid-Atlantic Regional Employment Workbook. The interactive dashboard allows you to see how the regional economy is changing for 29 different industries. Discovery Communications Will Leave Maryland for New York

Discovery Communications announced that they will be relocating their global headquarters, and 1,300 jobs, from Silver Spring to New York. The Fortune 500 company is one of four located in Maryland. Responding to how the move may affect the state, Montgomery County, and Silver Spring, Dr. Daraius Irani of the Regional Economic Studies Institute stated, “It was a big presence…Beyond the numbers, it does have an impact on the county’s psyche. It is losing a major employer.” Dr. Irani also noted that the company’s move could make it difficult to bring another Fortune 500 company to the area.

Lawmakers Race the Clock to Prevent Government Shutdown

As Congress debates a federal spending plan to avoid a government shutdown, Dr. Daraius Irani of the Regional Economic Studies Institute weighed in on potential impacts to the state. According to Dr. Irani, "This is really not a good situation for anybody involved … Five percent of our labor force works for the federal government. Another 10 percent are indirectly employed."
