Too hot to think about Halloween? Think again. WYPR, August 15, 2025
Despite the hot summer weather, we are already approaching the Halloween season in terms of retail. The Spirit Halloween location in Towson opens this month in preparation for the season, and Halloween candy and costumes are starting to appear on store shelves. RESI Chief Economist Daraius Irani stated to WYPR that Halloween is our second most commercialized holiday, with around $12 billion in annual sales. Even with people having fewer children than in the past, costume sales are being boosted by people dressing up their pets, with a 40 percent increase in the purchase of pet costumes since COVID.
