Economist explains what withdrawal of US troops means for America's debt WBAL TV 11, 4/15/2021
On Wednesday April 14, President Biden announced an end-date to America’s longest war. The President plans to pull the remaining 2,500 American troops out of Afghanistan in a measured and responsible manner beginning May 1, 2021. The war has gone on for nearly 20 years and cost the U.S. around $2 trillion. RESI Chief Economist Daraius Irani said that the war’s end does not also end the added debt to Americans. Irani said, “We never raised taxes to pay for the war, so we won't see a reduction on taxes just because the war is now ending.” He added that approximately 20,000 soldiers were wounded during the war and that some or most of those soldiers will have long-term health costs. In the end, Irani surmised, the U.S. has “$18 trillion in debt, so this is just $2 trillion of that.”
