Sweater Season
One day it’s 90 degrees with the sun beating down and the next day it’s cold and dreary. That’s Maryland for you! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: one of my favorite things about this area is that when the weather hits about 70 degrees you will see someone wearing a bikini and the next person wearing a full-length parka. If you are about to wear your full-length parka in October, let me stop you. Keep in mind that winter is still off in the distance. You can’t start with your warmest coat now. I mean, you can, but then what will you do when it gets really cold? Growing up near the Canadian border taught me that it’s unwise to wear your warmest coat at the first sign of a chill in the air. It’s better to be strategic. I may have too many coats, but the way I see it, in order to stay relatively comfortable in the cold, one must progress from windbreaker to polar fleece to pea coat to down jacket to industrial strength down jacket. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, people! It’s about layers. It’s about planning. It’s about holding off until you can hold off no more. Remember that what is “freezing” cold to you today, will seem lovely after a harsh winter. Perhaps I am taking this too far for this part of the country, but you never know. I have, in reserve, a coat that will keep me warm in 40-below temperatures. Is it fashionable? No. Do I look good in it? Also, no. But, if we find ourselves in an arctic vortex, I’m prepared. Heed my words and bundle up—but incrementally!
Stay safe and healthy,
Tracy Jacobs
