What just happened?
There are points in time when events occur that leave us all blindsided and dismayed, asking aloud, “what just happened?” Some of those events: the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion; the Chernobyl disaster; September 11, 2001; the Covid-19 pandemic; the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. You may have other moments that come to mind. At the end of last week, I asked again, “what just happened?” when the Supreme Court announced its decision to strike down gun carry restrictions that are on the books in several states, designed to keep their citizens safe from gun violence. The next day, I asked again, “what just happened?” when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Those of us who are asking, “what just happened?” are also left to wonder, “what’s next?” Anger, sadness, bewilderment, and fear are just some of the emotions that are boiling to the surface as hard-fought advances evaporate before our eyes. You may not agree, and if that’s the case, the good news is that we still live in a country where we can share our different views. If that ever goes away, will we all think to ourselves “what just happened?”
Stay safe and healthy,
Tracy Jacobs
