Oh, the possibilities...
My eyes are itchy. My nose is runny. My throat is scratchy. Everything is starting to bloom in my neighborhood and despite some seasonal allergies, I love it. Everyone loves it when the flowers are in full bloom, I know. Is it odd that I really enjoy that moment before they open fully—that moment when they aren’t in their full glory yet but awash in potential? I’ve always been fascinated by that instant before all is revealed. I tell college students who are about to graduate, “the world is your oyster,” rife with possibility. I truly mean that, and I’m excited for them with all the options that they have. The precipice of change is most exciting. Then, decisions get made—what job to take, where to live, etc. Reality sets in and the potential that was once there is now some facsimile of those hopes and dreams. It’s like trying to draw something that is so crystal clear in your mind’s eye. It doesn’t ever really come out the way you saw it in your head. Often things turn out even better than we could have imagined, but who doesn’t love that little sliver of time when the future hasn’t revealed itself yet?

The National Liberty Museum and the Barnes Museum

Come to Philadelphia to view art exhibits at the National Liberty Museum and the Barnes Museum. We will start at the National Liberty Museum which boasts a wonderful collection of glass art. Osher instructor and glass art expert, Howard Cohen, will be on the trip to give insights into the work on view. Then we head to the Barnes Museum which houses over 150 Renoir paintings, Picassos, and more. There is a special exhibit of two acclaimed contemporary South African artists, Sue Williamson and Lebohang Kganye. Lunch is on your own at either the Garden Restaurant (reservations suggested) or the Reflections Cafe in the Barnes. This trip is open to Osher members and others.
Departure from 7400 York Road rear parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Return at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Black Lives Matter, the Police and the Problem of Surplus Population

Cedric Johnson is Professor of Black Studies and Political Science at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His teaching and research interests include African American political thought, neoliberal politics, and class analysis and race. His most recent books are After Black Lives Matter: Policing and Anti-Capitalist Struggle (Verso, 2023) and The Panthers Can’t Save Us Now: Debating Left Politics and Black Lives Matter (Verso, 2022). Johnson’s book, Revolutionaries to Race Leaders: Black Power and the Making of African American Politics (University of Minnesota Press, 2007) was named the 2008 W.E.B. DuBois Outstanding Book of the Year by the National Conference of Black Political Scientists. He is also the editor of The Neoliberal Deluge: Hurricane Katrina, Late Capitalism and the Remaking of New Orleans (University of Minnesota Press, 2011). His writings have appeared in Labor Studies, Catalyst, Dissent, Nonsite, Jacobin, New Labor Forum, Perspectives on Politics, and Historical Materialism.
