You Gotta Be in It to Win It

I might not be the only one who dreams big about how I would spend my millions once I win the Powerball. I just might be the only one who does so while also forgetting to play. The odds were really stacked against me, then, when the recent jackpot was up to $2 billion dollars. Billion with a “b”! It’s such an incomprehensible amount of money but I would have done great things! My generosity knows no bounds. But alas, I didn’t stand a chance. I’ve been imagining how I’d spend my winnings ever since I was a kid. Those commercials for the New York Lotto convinced me that all I needed was “a dollar and a dream” and how Yolanda Vega, the face of the New York Lottery, called out her name, “YO-laaanda VEGa”, before drawing the winning numbers inscribed on white ping pong balls that magically popped out of a lottery machine at her command. I wasn’t old enough to play but that never stopped me from thinking about what I would do with my winnings. Needless to say, I would have been very responsible—and also quite generous—except with those people who did me wrong in some way, big or small. There are many people out there who faithfully play the lottery, the Powerball, and the Mega Millions—and I try my best to be nice to all of them.

Stay safe and healthy,

Visit to Federal Armored Museum

A group of students from the “Capitalism, Government, Money, and the Future of the World” course had lunch and took a guided tour of the Federal Armored Museum in Hunt Valley where they learned how the Dunbar family began in the armored car industry to become the fourth largest, privately held armored car company, Dunbar Armored. Sean Gibbons, retired VP of Dunbar Armored (and an Osher student!) led the tour, giving insights into the early days of the armored car business and how one small family business grew to become a multimillion-dollar national company.

Families and food: The power of connection

Steaming hot chicken noodle soup … chewy oatmeal chocolate-chip cookies … apple pie with a perfect crust. Sure, food is a necessity -- but it can also nourish the soul. And what role does food play in our connections to heritage, or to home? Our guests today, Saima Sitwat and Soo Koo, are featured in a series of videos and essays that explores those questions and more, particularly for immigrants to America. It’s called “Food at Home.”
