Secret Admiration Society
My dear friend, Susan, has often been the recipient of the short end of the stick, but despite her countless trials and tribulations, she has maintained an amazing sense of humor, kindness, and strength. I think others who've dealt with the sort of circumstances that she has might be callous and bitter, but she's managed to remain a genuine, caring person. In a recent conversation, I blurted out that I admired her for these qualities which led me to realize that it’s not often that we tell our friends, loved ones, or even acquaintances that we admire them. It's simultaneously awkward and rewarding to let someone know that you admire them for certain characteristics that others may take for granted. It got me thinking about different people that I know and what it is that I admire about them. Maybe I'd like to emulate some of their traits, but there is no jealousy involved. Maybe I even possess some of the attributes that I admire in someone else. It doesn’t matter. I now have a long list of the attributes that I admire in my friends, co-workers, family members young (my 4-year-old niece radiates confidence and charm while her twin brother is brimming with sensitivity and curiosity) and old, acquaintances, total strangers, and yes, Osher members too. I'm going to make it a point to tell my niece and nephew how much I admire them the next chance I get—and I look forward to spilling the beans to others too. After all, why keep it a secret?
Stay safe and healthy,
Tracy Jacobs

Sponsored by the TU Center for Student Diversity and the Cook Library
Wednesday, October 26, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Towson University, University Union Room 302A
The Human Library is a conversation event where people are the books. People act as books with titles like: Muslim, Gay, Baby Boomer, Alcoholic, ADHD, Lower income, Transgender, etc. The books share their stories with readers who can check out a person to learn more about their identity and ask them questions. Ultimately, the event hopes to challenge societal prejudices and to bring a better understanding of community to everyone involved. We want to show the world, “don’t judge a book by its cover!" Generally these conversations last 30 minutes long.
Find more information on the global phenomenon of the Human Library HERE.
Ready to participate in this year's Human Library? Volunteer to be a book or register to be a reader.
