Rock Solid Advice

Rock painted with Live More Worry Less Rock painted with Smile Often

Hand-painted rocks by Dayle Dabney

A couple of years ago an Osher member, Dayle Dabney, gave me a hand-painted rock that I kept on my desk in my office. One side of the rock says, “Live more, worry less” and the other side says “Smile often.” If you have met Dayle, you know that she appears to live by these mantras. Always smiling, she is known to wear colorful clothing and jewelry. If it’s a holiday, her attire matches the season and even if you haven’t said a word to each other, just seeing her enjoyment of life will bring a smile. Today, I found the rock in my stash of work-from-home office supplies and realized that I have been worrying more and along with that I’m pretty sure I’ve also been smiling less often. I don’t think that I’m the lone worrier out there so to my fellow worry warts, Debbie Downers, and Negative Nellies—let’s follow the advice on the rock!

Lino Tagliapietra creates a glass sculpture

Master of Glassblowing: Lino Tagliapietra with Howard Cohen

Lino Tagliapietra, at age 85, is considered by many of his fellow artists to be the world’s finest glass artist. He began his apprenticeship at age 11 in a factory on the island of Murano off the coast of Venice where glass has been made since the 13th century. Even at age 85, he is an energetic and tireless worker. Every day, he enters a hot shop somewhere around the world with eager enthusiasm to use his unparalleled acumen to create yet another radiant form with brilliant colors, graceful curves, and intricate patterns. Howard Cohen will illustrate this lecture with photos he’s taken of Lino’s work in Chicago, Tagliapietra’s studios in Seattle and Murano, and a recent exhibition at Heller Gallery in New York that he visited in January 2020. He has taught courses on contemporary glass art for Osher at Towson University, Osher at JHU, and the Community College of Baltimore County Senior Institute. A collector of art glass for the past 24 years, Howard is on the board of the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass Art.
