Under normal circumstances…

Jungle background with tropical palm leaves

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown many of us headfirst into a panoply of emotions—even if we’re generally pretty even-keeled under normal circumstances. For one, I’ve come to use the phrase “under normal circumstances” to differentiate the time B.C. (Before COVID-19) with the current situation. Although it seems impossible to fathom right now, there will be a time when we consider ourselves to be existing in normal circumstances once again. What will that normal be? Those many emotions that may come and go through your day-to-day will somehow inform how you interpret “normal” down the road. If you are feeling bored, sad, anxious, lonely, uncertain, happy, grateful, creative, etc. or all of the above on an oddly timed rotation, I’d say that’s pretty normal all things considered. That brings me to another phrase I have been using pretty often, “all things considered.” If, under normal circumstances, you’d be less aware of your feelings each and every moment but now you are more aware, I’d say that you’re doing well, all things considered!

Stay safe and healthy,

Casablanca

Casablanca (1942) and the Films it Influenced with Peter Lev

Casablanca is one of the most popular, critically represented and simply beloved American films. It won Academy Awards in 1943 for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. More recent critics’ polls list it as one of the top films in American and world cinema history. This lecture focuses on three aspects of Casablanca: 1. An overview of the making of the film; 2. A more detailed account of casting and performance; 3. Discussion of several films that were influenced by Casablanca. The lecture should add to your understanding of Casablanca and to your appreciation of film as art. VIEW LECTURE

Peter Lev is professor emeritus of electronic media and film at Towson University. He is the author or editor of six books, most recently “Twentieth Century-Fox: The Zanuck Skouras Years 1935–1965.” His awards include an Academy Scholars Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the President’s Award for Distinguished Service to Towson University.
