Look on the Bright Side

Monty Python

One of my shortcomings is that I can’t remember movie quotes. There are a few phrases that I can whip out just like anybody else: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat”, “You had me at ‘hello’”, “What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate”, “I’ll have what she’s having”, and of course, “I’ll get you, my pretty, and your little dog, too!” But I’m not one of those people who can watch a movie and know every word, line for line. My memory just isn’t that good. Amazingly, there is one exception. If I’m watching Monty Python’s “The Life of Brian”, I can keep apace with all of the dialogue, reciting each and every part along with the characters. Basically, you’ve just been forewarned that I will do this if we watch “The Life of Brian” together. This may be the reason that I’ve seen this movie many times over by myself. While it may not be “Citizen Kane”, it is in my personal canon of great films somewhere up there with “Seems Like Old Times” (which, incidentally, gave us the great line “I had to get my feet scraped.”) Today, I’ve been thinking about “The Life of Brian” simply because I have had its famous song “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” going through my head on a constant loop. What a welcome earworm to have in this crazy world. “If life seems jolly rotten, there’s something you’ve forgotten, And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing, When you’re feeling in the dumps, Don’t be silly chumps, Just purse your lips and whistle, that’s the thing, And…Always look on the bright side of life…” Each verse and chorus and whistle reminding me that this isn’t bad advice, especially if you just happen to be hanging around.

May is Older Americans Month

Age my way! graphic with illustration

Older adults in Maryland and throughout the nation play vital, positive roles in our communities as mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, members of the workforce, family members and trusted friends. Just as each person is unique, so too is the journey of how each person ages. There is no one way to age.

Governor Larry Hogan has proclaimed May 2022 as Older Marylanders Month. Please take a moment to read the signed proclamation.
