Leaving Home
Just like you, I’ve been reading, watching, and listening to the news a lot and the past couple of weeks have been remarkable in the way that one single person on this planet has shaped the course of events for so many. We have the luxury of turning off the television or tuning out the radio. We can call it “news” when it is happening to someone else. But, for that someone else, it is their life. They woke up one morning with the same comforts of home that you and I might have and without much warning at all, they had to grab what they could carry and leave to find safety for themselves and for their families. They may have chosen to stay to fight or had that choice made for them. Will they ever be able to go back home and what will home be? Half a world away, we watch as an entire country and its people suffer. It’s been this way before, through other wars. This David v. Goliath story is on TV with an international audience but it’s preempted in Russia. We see the Ukrainian people finding strength and resiliency in small acts of defiance that celebrate their humanity in the face of incredible inhumanity. Glory to Ukraine, they say proudly. For those who are able to make their way to Poland and Romania, they are being met with hot soup and caring souls who will take them in as refugees. Something they didn’t ever expect they would be. I think “can you imagine?” and to anyone who can answer “yes”, I wish it weren’t so. If ever there was a time to root for the underdog, that time is now.
Stay safe and healthy,
Tracy Jacobs

Wednesday, Wed., March 23 from 7–8:15 p.m. Free Virtual Webinar
Join Bernice Lerner in a discussion of her book "All the Horrors of War: A Jewish Girl, a British Doctor, and the Liberation of Bergen-Belsen." She will discuss the stories of Rachel Genuth, her mother and Bergen-Belsen survivor, and Brig. Glyn Hughes, a British medical director and the first Allied medical officer to enter the liberated camp. Their narratives tell larger, lesser-known stories about the suffering of victims, the struggles of liberators and the human capacity for fortitude and redemption.
