Distinguishing between Participles and Gerunds - Exercise 5

Directions:  Each sentence contains an underlined verbal phrase. In the box below each sentence, identify the verbal as a present participle or gerund. If the verbal is a participle, write the noun that it is modifying. If the verbal is a gerund, write its function (subject, direct object, appositive, object of preposition, subjective complement). 1.  "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts" is an old saying.



2.  Handling toads does not cause warts.



3.  People are complaining about Jenny's habit of killing squirrels with her BB gun.



4.  We finally found Sam, sitting in the lobby.



5.  After hemming the new dress, Mary ironed it.



6.  Last week the tree began sprouting blossoms.



7.  George, filling his pockets with quarters, felt quite rich.



8.  By playing the message backwards, you will understand the code.
