Message from the Vice President

Fall is upon us and it is exciting times at the Division of Strategic Partnerships and Applied Research. As many of you know, we have hired the new executive director of entrepreneurship, Dr. Nick Hammond. We now have an advisory board of external individuals who also are members of the President’s Board of Visitors. This is the first time that we have had an advisory board and it will be a game changer for us. Members include Jeff Rosen, Ted Zaleski, Nancy Grasmick, Myrna Cardin, Don Fry, Suzy Ganz, Larry Letow, Edna Primrose, and Dan White.

Center for GIS

CGIS worked with MD. Dept. of Agriculture to launch the MD Cover Crop Program application in spring 2017. We are now working to make the application iPad compliant, which includes some particularly challenging tasks involving working with the map, such as editing field boundaries. Being able to take the iPad into the field to perform routine inspections represents a big step forward in modernizing the program.

Invest in Yourself

Continuing & Professional Studies

We are expanding course options for our PMP course. Starting in January 2019, we are introducing a new hybrid PMP course. The course integrates face-to-face learning and online activities. Students will meet with the instructor and each other at the beginning and end of the course. The remainder of the course will be taught online.

Partnerships & Outreach

Our team recently created a new BTU Newsletter, called #BTUatWork. It's sent to all TU faculty and staff and highlights the people, programs, resources, and events focused on moving our collective work with community partners forward. We are also facilitating new events supporting faculty and staff and their BTU efforts. First up is Lunch & Learn: Community Engagement 101 on October 17.

Regional Economic Studies Institute

In 2017, RESI and CGIS partnered with the MD Chamber of Commerce to create a State of Maryland Metrics dashboard. We recently completed a video that highlights the partnership and the interactive dashboard.

On November 15, RESI will host the Economic Outlook Forum. Join our team and business leaders for breakfast, networking, and Daraius' annual economic forecast for our state.

Audience members ask questions of presenting company founders.

Venture Creation

Earlier this week, we welcomed Fixt co-founder and CEO Luke Cooper to our 301 flex space for the latest iteration of Founder Stories. Luke has a great story to tell and we were happy to have him share it.

Next Thursday, we will host the EdTech Innovation Showcase. 20+ TU Incubator members and partners will showcase their work to a crowd of educators, administrators, and investors via lightning pitches, product demos, and networking.
