SPARK evening programming from Osher at Towson University is back for a conversation about the connection between severe weather, natural hazards, and vulnerability.

Severe weather is more than just a subject for small talk, it affects us all. Join local experts to find out how emergency management teams work to prepare and help communities in the wake of severe weather. Consider the economic and public health repercussions of severe weather. Finally, learn how you can be better prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings our way.

Tickets are $25 per person and includes a pre-lecture reception with hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine, along with accessible parking.

About the presenters

Michael Allen

Michael J. Allen, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of climatology at Towson University, a climate scientist, and a 2023 Fulbright Scholar. His research explores the intersection of weather and climate on human health, particularly as it relates to extreme temperatures, climate variability and change. His work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and his research on seasonal climate change has been highlighted by National Geographic.

Rachel Jay

Rachael Jay is a meteorologist for WJZ. Her passion is sharing weather and science information and educating the public on what may be considered complicated topics. She hopes her work helps to make science more accessible and enjoyable and inspires young girls to pursue STEM careers. She is a board member for the American Meteorological Society, serving on both the Board for Early Career Professionals and the Board of Digital Meteorologists.

Ashley Morris

Ashley Morris is the preparedness and outreach manager for Prince George’s County Office of Emergency Management. She oversees emergency planning and outreach efforts and is involved in emergency operations support and emergency operation center readiness involving weather briefings. Ashley aims to bridge the communities of meteorology and emergency management and has coordinated many weather-oriented programs and initiatives.
