My Way
Just like many other cities, Baltimore has ceremoniously renamed portions of streets to honor local celebrities and cultural icons. As I drive to work most days, I pass by “Tupac Shakur Way,” a section of Greenmount Avenue named after the late rap artist who grew up in Baltimore in the 1980s. Not too far away, at the former site of Memorial Stadium, there is “Frank Robinson Way” named after the famed Orioles outfielder. There are streets honoring Billie Holiday, Babe Ruth, Henrietta Lacks and André De Shields, to name a few. There is a park named after the late congressman Elijah Cummings. Iconic Baltimore filmmaker, writer and actor John Waters even has an all-gender restroom named after him at the Baltimore Museum of Art. As I make my commute down these famously named byways, I let my mind wander and think, maybe, if I play my cards right, I could get a street or park — even a bathroom — named after me. I know it’s a longshot and that I’ll need to do something incredibly noteworthy to deserve this type of recognition, but maybe this is just the motivation I need!
Stay safe and healthy,
Tracy Jacobs
