TU Osher News & Notes

You must be twins

Have you ever worn the same outfit as someone else? In college, I made plans to meet my friend, Erin, at the dining hall for dinner. We were all bundled up in our winter coats, so it wasn’t until we sat down and took our coats off that we realized we were wearing identical shirts and Levi’s jeans. I thought we must’ve looked ridiculous and I chuckled about it all through dinner. Last year, I accompanied my husband to his high school reunion only to discover that I was wearing the same outfit as the wife of one of his classmates. Oh sure, I tried to laugh it off, but she didn’t find it quite as amusing. I spent a good part of the evening trying to distance myself from her so that fewer people would notice. This sort of thing can happen to anyone—even celebrities. When two celebrities wear the same outfit at the same event, they show up in a “Who Wore It Better?” magazine spread for all the world to see. I have yet to show up wearing the same outfit as someone else on the red carpet but there was the time I was in my living room watching news footage of the drug kingpin, El Chapo, handcuffed and surrounded by DEA agents. My reaction as I saw him scuffle along in shackles: “I have those pants!” El Chapo and I were both wearing navy-blue Adidas track pants with neon orange stripes down the sides. What were the odds? I got mine on sale at TJ Maxx years ago. I don’t know where El Chapo got his or whether or not he got a good deal, but I am relatively sure that in that moment, at least, I wore it better.
