TU Osher News & Notes

The Big and Small of It

Lately, on evening walks, I stare up at the sky to notice the moon and the stars. In a good week, I’ll see a bunch of unidentified flying objects—at least, I'm unable to identify them. I don’t take too much time trying to figure out what they are. Instead, I think of how big the sky is, and in contrast how small I am. I feel awed. I love that feeling, whether it is from driving through the mountains, looking out at the ocean to the horizon, or walking through a forest and gazing up to see the sun poking through the tall trees. I feel like a flea on a patch of skin. The world is big. My mind can’t begin to comprehend the infinitely vast outer space, the universe and its galaxies. We are small. We are mere specks, if even that, in comparison. If we are these motes in the galaxy, what are actual motes? They are even smaller still. Feeling a sense of awe from nature is something that happens in the present, not while ruminating on the past or worrying about the future. Everything comes into perspective. As a child or a teenager, being told “you are not the center of the universe” comes as a rude awakening, but as an adult, it is pure solace.

Stay safe and healthy,
