From my desk: News from President Schatzel

This is what higher education is meant to do.

One of my very favorite things about Towson University is that each year brings new faces to campus and new meaning to our institutional mission.

Even before our fall semester began this week, many of our nearly 6,000 new freshmen, transfer and graduate students were putting their ambition to work in Baltimore's communities. Our incoming freshman class is the largest, most diverse and most academically prepared in TU history. These talented students come from 28 other states and 18 foreign countries. Approximately 46 percent of incoming freshman are racial or ethnic minorities, and 25 percent are African-American—the highest ever for an incoming class.

It is a great time to be a Tiger. In the past month,TU was recognized as among America's Top Colleges by Forbes, one of the best colleges in the Northeast by Princeton Review, one of the best Master's universities by Washington Monthly and one of the best investments in higher education by Money Magazine. I am proud of what these rankings reflect: world-class teaching and research; thriving diversity and inclusion; and abundant access to internships and other transformational experiences.

This is what creates opportunities. This is what higher education is meant to do.

There is much to be proud of at Towson University, and there are truly great things ahead!
